Staying Safe Around Garage Doors

When one of my children was playing with our garage doors a few years ago, we heard a piercing scream that we will never forget. She had gotten her fingers pinched in the side of the door, and we knew that we had to help her--and fast. Because of our quick actions and first aid, we were able to take care of the problem. After we returned home, I started thinking about ways to keep our kids safe around garage doors. This blog contains loads of helpful information about maintaining your garage doors, looking after your curious children, and preventing serious injury.

The end of the world will definitely increase competition for resources. But what if you're the one with the resources? You'll want to protect them. Securing your garage will definitely help you with your efforts. Let's take a look at some strategies you should use if you are a true survivalist and also happen to know about garage door repair and maintenance:

Get A Steel Door

If you want to protect your resources, you're going to need to buy a heavy steel door. Steel is hard to penetrate. It can also be unassuming. A steel door that has a regular appearance on the outside won't attract a lot of unwanted attention.

Reinforce The Steel Door

Get some welding equipment and take a welding class. You can quickly acquire the skills needed to reinforce your steel door. You'll want to add steel panels with bulletproof material between the panels.

There is a reason why you want to do this job yourself. You don't want anyone knowing that you have reinforced doors. People may talk. And if they talk, they will know that your place is the most secure hideout in the entire neighborhood.

Consider Vision

Ideally, you want to be able to see what is happening outside of your garage. Glass won't cut it. It can be broken. You want to build an opening into your garage door that can be open and closed. These openings can be slots with with metal sliding over them.

The sliding metal can be positioned to work vertically or horizontally. It can also be a flap-like system operating from the inside.

Exterior Spikes

These will work if you don't have an overhead garage door. You can prepare panels that have spikes on them. Hide them in your garage. When the apocalypse comes, you can fasten them to your garage doors. This will prevent scavengers from getting up close and personal.

Use Electricity

Yes, electricity will be hard to come by during the apocalypse. But if you have a generator in place, you will have electricity. You can use electricity to give your garage door an electric charge. The charge can be used to shock attackers.

Have two connectors that you can use to deliver electricity from your generator to your garage door.

Hidden Panels

Building hidden panels into your garage door will allow you to store small weapons and ammunition. You can use this stash in the event that other areas of your stronghold have been compromised.

Use the above tips to prepare for unwanted visitors during the apocalypse.
