Early this week, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life released a groundbreaking survey of 35,000 Americans documenting the diversity and tolerance of people of faith and the growing consensus around issues like poverty and the environment.
But what religion story dominated the cable networks yesterday? James Dobson attacking Sen. Barack Obama for a speach he gave two years ago on his faith.
Let the media know there's a lot more to faith than James Dobson
In fact, on Tuesday, June 24, Dr. Dobson was mentioned a total of 189 times on CNN, MSNBC and Fox News. The landmark Pew survey? Just 8.
Dobson is entitled to his opinion, but why do the networks think the political attacks of one controversial figure count for so much more than the beliefs of the American population?
As the Pew survey demonstrated, people of faith are diverse and don't fit easily into old stereotypes. Focusing media attention on James Dobson distorts the picture of religion in America and distracts from the true priorities of people of faith.
Send a message to the media: James Dobson doesn't speak for all people of faith, so stop treating him like he does.
Thank you for all you do,
